Grilling Goodness – Turkey Burgers

Like me, my friend Lisa, likes to work out and eat healthy foods, sews and does crafts. She was the first person I met when we moved back to this area. She lives right across the street from us. Lisa brought us dinner a few days after the moving truck showed up with all of our belongings.  I was on day 4 of unpacking & working on the kitchen when Lisa rang the doorbell. What a God send that dinner was! And Lisa & her husband, Rich have become great friends.

On a recent walk together, Lisa was talking about the turkey burgers she was going to make for dinner. I know turkey burgers are much better for you than beef burgers, but the recipes I had tried in the past weren’t all that good. Lisa raved about her recipe and gave it to me to try.  She was right and her recipe was a hit with Kelly, Gilbert, Eric & I. I hadn’t been looking in the right places for a turkey burger recipe. For the best recipes for an ingredient, check out the manufacturer or producer of that ingredient to get some great ones.

Turkey Burgers

Turkey Burgers (adapted from The Turkey Store Cookbook by Jerry Jerome & Karen Levine)   Total Time Required: 1 hour, Prep Time: 15 minutes, Chill Time: 30 minutes, Cook Time: 15 minutes, Makes 5 or 6 burgers

  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 20 ounces ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • avocado slices, cheese, ketchup, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lettuce for serving

In a small skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil until it is hot then add the onion and sauté it until it is translucent, about 4 minutes.  Add the garlic to the onion in the skillet and sauté for about another minute. Allow the onions & garlic to cool.

The onions & garlic need to cool a bit so they don’t cook the egg!

Combine the turkey, bread crumbs, egg, ketchup, salt & pepper and the cooled onions & garlic in a large mixing bowl.

Mix it all together after the onions cool.

Shape them into 5 or 6 burgers. Grill the burgers about 4 minutes a side, flipping them just once, over medium heat.

Grill the burgers.

Serve on rolls with your favorite condiments and sides.

Serve with fixin’s.

It’s wonderful to finally be in grilling season!  ~Linda
