Return to Spring! Flower & Berry Spring Cocktail

Despite an attempt earlier this week to return to Winter and wintry weather, it is Spring once again! The trees are leafing out, the temperatures are getting into the warm range during the day and not venturing very far down overnight, shrubs are starting to put out leaf buds, and perennial grasses & flowers are coming up. Those are all good signs and indicators that it is time to come out of hibernation and get back outdoors!

In celebration, I’ve been mixing up Spring cocktails all week. This season’s front runner is a gin & elderflower liqueur mixture that gets its touch of Spring from the addition of muddled strawberries to the cocktail shaker. The delicate notes of fruit and flower is light and subtle, as is the season. Welcome, Spring!

Flower & Berry Spring Cocktail

Flower & Berry Spring Cocktail (adapted from foodandwine.com) Serves 2

  • 4 large strawberries
  • 3 ounces gin
  • 1 1/2 ounces St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
  • 1 1/2 ounces lemon juice
  • 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) simple syrup
  • club soda for serving, optional

Instructions:

In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, muddle 2 large, stemless strawberries.

Muddle 2 of the strawberries.

Half fill the cocktail shaker with ice. Add the gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker. Shake it all up until well-chilled, about 1 minute. Strain the cocktail into 2 cocktail glasses with ice.

Add the cocktail to a glass of ice.

Top off each glass with an ounce of club soda, if desired. Garnish the glasses with another strawberry.
