Home Run Hit! Sausage & Giardiniera Pizza

Most Friday nights, we are at home making pizza and welcoming in the weekend with martinis. If we are traveling on a Friday, we look for a pizza place wherever we happen to be. Occasionally, we go out with friends for pizza, even if we are not traveling. On a recent Friday, we went to Home Run Inn Pizza with another couple. It’s their favorite pizza place. We ordered the sausage & giardiniera pizza. Neither Eric nor I had ever tried or even contemplated that combination before. We really enjoyed it and have been making our own version of it at home for the past few weeks.

We’ve been using purchased giardiniera so far, comparing different brands to get a sense of what we like. The plan is to experiment with making our own giardiniera over the course of the summer! Stay tuned for details on that!

Sausage & Giardiniera Pizza

Sausage & Giardiniera Pizza (inspired by Home Run Inn Pizza)

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound pizza dough, homemade or purchased
  • 3/4 cup pizza sauce
  • 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2/3 cup giardiniera, oil drained
  • 6 ounces sweet or hot Italian sausage
  • 5 slices or 3 ounces provolone
  • dried oregano & basil for sprinkling on top of the pizza, if desired

Instructions:

Remove the sausage from the casings if using links. Break up the sausage and cook it in a skillet over medium heat. Drain the grease from the meat.

Cook the sausage.

Roll the dough out to fit the pizza pan or roll it out onto the peel if using a pizza stone. Spread the sauce over the crust to within a half inch of the edges. Sprinkle the mozzarella over the sauce.

Spread the sauce & mozzarella on the dough.

Distribute the giardiniera over the cheese. Layer the sausage over the pizza.

Add the cooked sausage & giardiniera

Cut the provolone into pieces or shred it. Distribute the provolone over the pizza. Sprinkle the top of the pizza with basil and oregano, if desired.

Layer the provolone on last. (Eric likes to make a lattice design on the pizza with the provolone. The design is totally optional!)

Bake the pizza in a 450ºF oven or on the grill over high heat until the top layer of cheese melts into the giardiniera, about 8 minutes or until the desired doneness.

It’s done!

Allow the pizza to rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
