Grilling for Father’s Day, Part 2 – Southwest Turkey Burgers

I’m sticking with the grilling theme for our upcoming Father’s Day celebration this weekend, as the predicted weather will be perfect for outdoor cooking in our area. These burgers will pair nicely with the grilled asparagus salad that was posted earlier this week.

Turkey burgers are a weekly staple on our Summer dinner menu. On its own, ground turkey burgers can be a bit underwhelming. Without added ingredients and seasonings, it isn’t all that exciting or flavorful. But when garlic, shallots, two kinds of fresh peppers, cumin, hot sauce, and steak seasoning are all added to the meat, it is out of this world! Dads will appreciate these easy and mouthwatering burgers!

They are great on the grill and equally as good when cooked in a skillet. I have included both directions as others living in our immediate area may prefer to stay indoors rather than trying to dodge the two broods of periodic cicadas that are currently still abundantly present in Chicagoland!

Chop the garlic, veggies, and herb.

Combine the turkey meat with the garlic, shallot, thyme, parsley, bell pepper, jalapeno pepper, cumin, hot pepper sauce, and steak seasoning.

Divide the mixture into 5 or 6 equal parts then form them into patties. Refrigerate the burgers for at least 1/2 hour before cooking.

Form the meat into patties.

Preheat the grill to medium high. Drizzle the patties with some oil to coat them. Grill the burgers over medium high heat for 5 to 6 minutes on each side.

Grill the burgers.

Alternately, cook the burgers in a skillet over medium high heat for 5 – 6 minutes on each side.

These can also be cooked in a skillet.

Place the sliced cheese over the patties in the last 2 minutes of cooking, using 1 or 2 slices for each burger.

Add the cheese to the burgers in the last minute or two of cooking.

Serve the cheeseburgers in the buns with the desired condiments.

No matter which way they are cooked, these are tasty!

Happy Father’s Day!  ~Linda
