The final round of the playoff games is over and the 2024 NFC championship team is the San Francisco 49ers. They are going to the Super Bowl after their dramatic win over the Detroit Lions!
The 49ers, established in 1946, were the first major league professional sports franchise based in San Francisco. One of the most successful teams in NFL history, they have won five Super Bowl championships. Hall of Famer Joe Montana quarterbacked three of their Lombardo Trophy wins. They have also won seven NFC championships and have set a number of notable records in the NFL, including most consecutive seasons leading the league in scoring (4), and most touchdowns (8) and points scored (55) in a Super Bowl.
Named for the prospectors who arrived in Northern California in the 1849 Gold Rush, the team started out in San Francisco. They moved to Santa Clara, CA in 1988, but retained their city of origin as part of the team name. San Francisco, known for its diverse food scene, has influences from many different cultures.
There were numerous choices when it came down to choosing a food offering for 49ers fans. While I could have gone the seafood route with clam chowder or crab cakes, or something from Chinese or Italian cuisines, reflecting the city’s multicultural population, I opted for a California twist on that perennial football game standby, guacamole. Before trying out the recipe, I was a bit skeptical about it. I mistakenly thought that it was going to be a subtle twist on guacamole, but nothing particularly special. I was wrong. Sun-dried tomatoes and basil add a spectacularly different, creative, and delicious touch to this quintessential Super Bowl gathering fare.
