Super Bowl LVII Part 1: Philadelphia Eagles – Philly Cheesesteak Dip

Super Bowl LVII is set to be played this coming weekend. The contest between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs promises to be a good one!

This will be the Eagles fourth appearance in a Super Bowl, with a 1-2 record. The birds are the designated home team for the game, which will be played in Glendale, Arizona. Jalen Hurts will be the youngest Eagle quarterback to start in a Super Bowl game and only the eighth QB to start in the competition for the Lombardy Trophy before his 25 birthday.

In the regular season, the Eagles won eight straight games and finished the season tied with a 14-3 record. They easily defeated their two playoff opponents to land in the upcoming contest, excelling on both sides of the ball.

While many will be tuning in for the game itself (including Eric & Andrew and most all of our extend family back East in the suburbs of Philadelphia), I will be more interested in the pregame and halftime performances, as well as the entertaining commercials that air during the game. Country singer Chris Stapleton will be singing the national anthem with Rihanna as the headliner for the halftime show. And while we’re enjoying the game, we’ll be munching on an iconic Philadelphia food, the Philly cheesesteak. Here it is turned into a dip and served in a bread bowl.

Philly Cheesesteak Dip

Philly Cheesesteak Dip (adapted from mccormick.com) Total Time Required: 35 minutes, Prep Time: 15 minutes, Cook Time: 20 minutes, Makes: 16 – 20 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound loaf of bread, oval in shape
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon beef bouillon powder or 1 beef bouillon cube, finely chopped or grated
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped green pepper
  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped onion
  • 1 cup jarred processed cheese sauce
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 pound roast beef, cut into bite-size pieces

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place the bread on baking sheet sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Cut an oval or football shape on top of the bread and remove the bread center to make room for the dip. Cut the removed bread top and bread center into bite-size pieces. Set the bread pieces aside for serving. In a small bowl, combine the flour, bouillon, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and parsley. Set the mixture aside.

Combine the flour with the seasonings.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the green pepper and onion to the pan and cook and stir for 3 minutes until the pepper is tender-crisp.

Add the green pepper and onion to the oil in the pan.

Stir the flour and seasoning mixture, cheese sauce, milk, and roast beef into the skillet, stirring until it is all well blended.

Add the flour mixture, cheese sauce, milk and beef to the pan.

Spoon the dip into the bread bowl.

Bake the filled bread for 15 minutes or until it is heated through. Serve the dip with the bread pieces. Drizzle with additional cheese sauce, if desired.

Don’t forget to eat the bread bowl when the bread pieces are gone! It is delicious!
